Gerunds and infinitives are forms of verbs that act like nouns. They can follow adjectives and other verbs. Gerunds can also follow prepositionsA gerund (often known as an -ing word) is a noun formed from a verb by adding-ing. Not all words formed with –ing are gerunds. An infinitive is to + the verb.

When a verb follows a verb it either takes the gerund or infinitive form. Some verbs can take either the gerund or the infinitive with no loss of meaning.

There are five rules:

A: These verbs can be followed by either a gerund or an infinitive:begin, continue, like, hate, love, prefer, start, etc.
Examples:

  • They began cleaning the school at night.
  • We like to cook dinner but hate to clean the apartment.

B: These verbs must be followed by a gerund:appreciate, avoid, dislike, enjoy, keep, miss, quit, etc.
Examples:

  • Keep moving or just avoid participating in such competitions.
  • She misses being the Diva.

C: These verbs must be followed by an infinitive:ask, decide, encourage, expect, hope, intend, learn, plan, seem, tell, want, etc.
Examples:

  • He asked her to collaborate , and she decided to accept.
  • I expect her to work hard at school and planned to give her a scholarship to university.

D: These 2 and 3-word verbs must be followed by a gerund:accustomed to, believe in, look forward to, put off, take care of, think about, etc.
Examples:

  • We’re looking forward to seeing you next semester.
  • He’s accustomed to working alone and he doesn’t think about changing his methods.

E: These 4 verbs are usually followed by pronoun + the base form of a verb: make, have, let, and help.
Examples:

  • Dad makes me love French and has me enjoy summer school.
  • My mother let me watch her cooking her delicious recipes and helped me learn the secrets.
