Complex or compound prepositions are a word group (such as “along with” or “on account of”) that functions like an ordinary one-word preposition. 

Complex prepositions can be divided into two groups:

1/Two-word compound prepositions (according to, aside from, because of, next to, etc).

Examples:
  • According to his teacher, he is a wonderful pupil.
  • Her show was perfect aside from that freaking laughter.
  • The parents fought hard and it’s all because of a stupid burnt cake.
  • The guilty man didn’t know he was sitting next to his victim’s son.

2/Three-word compound prepositions (as far as, in addition to, in front of, in spite of, on account of, etc).

Examples:

    • The explosion could reach as far as the court, which is 5 kms away.
    • In addition to innate rudeness, he has a miserable way of talking.
    • She gives asking nothing in return in spite of her bad conditions.
  • He can’t ran anymore on account of his broken ankle.
